There is a point every year when you begin to notice that something is changing.

It may still be hot outside. The garden may still be overflowing. Summer may have absolutely no intention of leaving quietly.

But the mornings feel different.

The light begins to change.

The days get just a little shorter. And every once in a while, there is that first hint of cool air that reminds you another season is coming.

Fall doesn't arrive all at once. Maybe we don't have to either.

We Don't Need to Reinvent Ourselves for Fall

There is something about September that makes us feel as though we're supposed to get everything back on track.

New schedules.

New routines.

Better habits.

Organized homes. A fresh start.

And there's nothing wrong with enjoying that little burst of energy that comes with a changing season.

But what if, instead of asking what we need to change, we started by asking:

What do I already have that I want to keep?

Over the summer, we spent a lot of time here talking about simple rituals.

Not elaborate self-care routines or perfectly curated mornings.  Just the ordinary things that make a day feel a little better.

Walking outside before the day gets busy. Working in the garden. Taking a cool shower after being outside in the heat. Cooking with something you grew yourself. Standing at the sink and noticing a scent you love. Sitting outside for a few minutes as the sun goes down.

They're small things. But small doesn't mean unimportant.

Carrying the Good Things With Us

When seasons change, some rituals naturally disappear.

Sooner or later, there won't be tomatoes to pick before work.

The garden will go quiet.

Evening light will arrive earlier, and eventually those open windows will have to close.

But the feeling behind those rituals doesn't have to disappear with them.

Maybe the garden reminded you how much you enjoy starting your day outside.

Maybe sitting on the porch helped you realize how much you need a few quiet minutes before moving on to the next thing.

Maybe working with your hands helped you slow your thoughts.

Maybe a shower at the end of a long day became more than getting clean. It became the little dividing line between everything you had to do and finally being home.

Those are things we can carry with us.

The ritual itself may change. The moment doesn't have to.

Making Room Instead of Adding More

That's the idea I keep coming back to as we move toward fall:  Making room for the moments.

Not adding more to our schedules. Not creating another checklist. And certainly not trying to manufacture a picture-perfect version of fall.

Instead, maybe we pay attention to the things that already make us feel peaceful, comfortable, grounded, joyful or simply more like ourselves—and intentionally leave a little room for them.

Sometimes that might mean ten quiet minutes outside. Sometimes it's cooking dinner with someone you love. Sometimes it's bringing a little piece of nature indoors. Sometimes it's a familiar scent filling the room.

And sometimes it's simply taking an ordinary shower without mentally rushing ahead to the next thing on the list.

These moments aren't impressive. Most of them aren't even particularly interesting to anyone else.

But they're ours. And perhaps that's exactly why they're worth protecting.

A New Season of Moments

Over the next several weeks, we'll be exploring what making room can look like as the seasons change.

We'll talk about our homes and the ordinary things that make them feel like home.

We'll spend some time thinking about things we do with our hands and why making, growing and creating can feel so grounding.

We'll explore scent and the surprising way it connects us to places, people and memories.

And we'll continue looking for simple rituals tucked inside everyday life.

Because I've realized something after our Summer of Simple Rituals:  We don't need a particular season to find these moments.  We simply need to keep noticing them.

So as summer begins giving way to fall, perhaps we don't need to ask what we're going to change.

Maybe there's a better question:

What is one moment from this summer that you want to make room for in the season ahead? Want more simple reminders to notice the good tucked inside ordinary days?

Join the JW Handmade Soaps Insiders Circle for weekly notes, first looks at what's happening in the workshop, and a little inspiration for finding your own moments. The moments are already waiting. We simply help you notice them.
