Finding the Next Version: When Our Everyday Rituals Change With the Seasons
Fall has finally started to feel like fall.
The mornings are cooler.
The light is changing.
Windows are open again.
And after months of trying to keep up with everything growing in the garden, even that seems to be taking a breath.
There's something about this point in the year that makes the change of seasons feel a little more real.
Summer isn't just ending.
Our everyday lives are beginning to look different.
And I've been thinking about what happens to all those little moments we enjoyed when the season that created them changes.
We Don't Really Miss the Thing
Think about something you loved doing this summer.
Maybe it was drinking your coffee outside in the morning.
Walking through the garden after dinner.
Sitting outside while the sun went down.
Cooking with something you had just picked.
Opening the windows when we were lucky enough to get a break from the heat.
Whatever it was, ask yourself:
What did you actually love about it?
Maybe the coffee wasn't really about the porch...Maybe it was about having ten quiet minutes before the rest of the day started.
Maybe the garden wasn't only about the tomatoes or basil.
Maybe you loved putting your hands in the dirt and watching something grow.
Maybe sitting outside wasn't about the chair you sat in or even the weather...Maybe it was simply the feeling of slowing down for a few minutes.
Sometimes we think we miss a particular thing when what we really miss is how that thing made us feel.
And that's good news.
Because seasons change.
But feelings aren't quite so dependent on the calendar.
Finding the Next Version
The garden will eventually go quiet.
The windows will close.
The evenings will get darker.
The porch may not be nearly as inviting when January arrives.
But that doesn't necessarily mean we have to give up the moments we found there.
We just have to find their next version.
Coffee on the porch can become coffee beside a sunny window.
Working in the garden can become making soup with vegetables you grew—or planning what you'll plant when spring comes back around.
An evening outside might become standing on the porch for a few minutes to watch the sunset before heading back inside.
Bare feet and open windows might become a favorite sweater and a warm shower at the end of the day.
The ritual changes.
The feeling can remain.
Maybe This Is What Seasonal Living Really Looks Like
We sometimes talk about seasonal living as though it requires us to completely transform our homes and routines every few months.
New décor.
New foods.
New activities.
New routines.
But perhaps living with the seasons is something much simpler.
Maybe it's noticing what's changing around us and allowing our ordinary lives to change along with it.
Not replacing everything.
Not rushing toward the next season.
Just adapting.
Keeping what still fits.
Letting go of what doesn't.
And finding another way to experience the things that mattered.
There's something comforting about that.
We don't have to hold tightly to summer.
And we don't have to manufacture a picture-perfect fall.
We can simply let one become the other.
The Moment Can Come With You
That's really what Making Room for the Moments has started to mean to me.
We're not trying to create a life filled with special moments.
Most of life isn't particularly special.
It's making coffee.
Washing our hands.
Cooking dinner.
Walking outside.
Opening a window.
Talking with someone we love.
Getting ready for bed.
But tucked inside all of those ordinary things are moments that make our days feel peaceful, joyful, comfortable, connected or simply more like our own.
Those are the things worth noticing.
And when a season changes, maybe we don't have to leave them behind.
We just ask:
What did I love about that moment?
And then...
What might its next version look like?
You don't have to figure it out.
You don't need to make a plan.
Just leave a little room for it.
You might be surprised where that familiar feeling shows up next.
